Frequently Asked Questions about your pool:

Pool Boys

Q. When should I open my pool for the season?

A. The best time to open your pool is soon after the ice on the pool has melted. This will eliminate algae from multiplying due to warm temperatures and rain, and your pool water can be protected with chlorine before algae rapidly grows in your winter contaminated, stagnant pool water. By starting each season without this algae threat, you'll greatly reduce the chance of water problems during the season and you'll maximize the life of your pool equipment.

Q. When do I change the sand in my filter?

A. You should change the sand every five years. By that time, your sand is no longer rough and new, but is instead "stream stone smooth", making it less efficient at filtering the particles out of your pool water. When that happens, your pool system has to work a lot longer and harder to accomplish the same task.

Q. Why install a salt system?

A saltwater pool system produces chlorine for your pool without chemicals, so you'll notice the increased swimmer comfort. As well, a salt system virtually eliminates algae problems, and you'll save quite a bit of money on pool chemicals after the system pays for itself, usually within about 3 years of ownership.

Q. Why should the filter be backwashed?

When the filter has accumulated a large amount of dirt, the water cannot pass freely through the sand and the filter loses efficiency as the pressure increases. Backwashing sends water backwards through the filter and flushes the trapped dirt out. After backwashing, you will notice an increase in return pressure to the pool system. Note however, that backwashing too often needlessly flushes pool chemicals (and salt) from your pool that will have to be replaced.
